ROI on VDI running on thin clients.

Written by Kent Skovgaard. Posted in VDI-in-a-box, XenDesktop

There have been a lot of speculation and calculations over the last couple of years and the word “ROI” has been used quite often.
Some are talking about all the advantages of running VDI. It has been very clear though, that there could be some unexpected overhead, caused by storage and hardware costs, eating up some of the savings and I have even heard people claim, that a VDI-solution may end up being a more expensive solution than a traditional client-server architecture with PC’s running the traditional way. I/O throughput seems to be the challenge.

Devon IT has made some calculations based on information from different ressources, among them EG Innovations and VMware homepages.
The conclusion is clear – they have made a comparison showing cost-savings achieved by running VDI on thin clients
Please be aware, that Devon IT is selling thin clients, and therefore can not be considered independent. But at least they have quoted their sources.

Poppelgaard.com – now with multiple authors

Written by Thomas Poppelgaard. Posted in Citrix

Hi all i am very proud to announce that poppelgaard.com is under heavy construction and thats why I have had my blog in a “minor” silent period. You will in the nearest future see more articles where we want to start a conversation where we invite the reader to participate and share their thoughts on an article. At E2E Virtualization Conference in May 2012 in Vienna i had the opportunity to held two sessions (VDI battle XD VS VDI-in-a-box) and (Best Practise XA HDX 3D & XD HDX 3D Pro) and i have made about 50 videos, that i am converting the next two weeks. I am going to share the best of them on poppelgaard.com and the best part i will record more videos with EndUser performance with XenApp HDX 3D and XenDesktop HDX 3D Pro so people can get a better visual impression, how powerful these technologies are and why you should start implementing these technologies.

I have had poppelgaard.com for over 2 years now and i have many times thoughts about teaming up with some of my good friends and have them writing articles too and share their minds to the Citrix community and i am proud to announce that the second contributor  is onboard poppelgaard.com. Who is the second contributor, let me tell you a little about him: His name is Kent Skovgaard and have been working with Citrix and general Microsoft infrastructure for the last 13 years. He have several Citrix examins including CCEE. Kent Skovgaard works at a company called Comparex as a Senior Infrastructure SE, where he also works with distibution of EG Innovations monitoring software for the nordics. If you havent checked EG innovation, then check it out its awesome what they do.

Again i would like to thank you for reading my blog and i will build soon a new and better structure to simplify informations and the purpose is to get access to Citrix informations in a simple and fast way and build better solutions and share informations for free.

Cheers
Thomas Poppelgaard

Citrix Simple License Service 1.0

Written by Thomas Poppelgaard. Posted in Citrix

Citrix have released a new License product for Citrix products.

About the Citrix Simple License Service 1.0

The Citrix Simple License Service enables you to allocate and install license files on a license server using a web page interface. Install the Simple License Service on a license server and connect to it locally with the Start menu shortcut or remotely with the Simple License Service URL.

Considerations

  • The Simple License Service allocates and downloads all the licenses available for a specific product. If you want to allocate and download only some of the licenses for a product, use My Citrix.
  • Once you click Allocate and Download, you cannot cancel it. If the Allocate and Download fails, useMy Citrix.
  • The Simple License Service does not support redownloading or reallocating of license files. For those features, use My Citrix.
  • If you rename the license server, you must reallocate any license files allocated under the old license server name and reinstall the Simple License Service. You cannot use the Simple License Service to reallocate license files. For more information about reallocating files, see Reallocating License Files in Citrix eDocs – Licensing Your Product.
  • If the Simple License Service is installed and you upgrade your license server, you must repair the Simple License Service before using it again.

Note that on XenServer 7.1, installing VDA 7.13 also works to enable vGPUs running XenDesktop 7.11 even using the newer “NvFBCEnable.exe -enable -noreset” command. Tested with an M60 using various profiles.
