Citrix have released a new version of App Preparation Tool for Mobile Apps. This release now supports iOS and Android apps, this is a huge step forward for Citrix to manage mobile apps in the enterprise. At Citrix Synergy in Barcelona its Citrix strategy to be a strong player that will deliver enterprise solutions which will solve many companies mobile business challenges. This is to provide a better and much more securely mobile platform provided by Citrix. This is the first step for Citrix to final support iOS and Android next we might see support for the Windows 8 mobile platform.

App Preparation Tool for Mobile Apps

Mobile app management allows you to securely manage and deliver mobile apps to users. With the Citrix App Preparation Tool, you can wrap iOS and Android apps to secure access and enforce policies. After you wrap the app, you can upload the app to CloudGateway. Users can then download and install the app from Citrix Receiver. They can subsequently open and work with the app from an icon on the home screen, on the mobile device, or from the Receiver home page.

How the App Preparation Tool Works

Citrix provides the Citrix App Preparation Tool so that you can wrap a mobile app for iOS or Android with Citrix logic and policies. The tool can securely wrap an app that was created within your organization or a mobile app made outside the company. After the app is wrapped, you can upload the app to CloudGateway.

After you download the App Preparation Tool from My Citrix on the Citrix Web site, when you run the tool, the tool prompts you to follow basic steps. For both types of app, use the following guidelines:

  • Provide the app name and optional details about the app.
  • Provide a list of devices to exclude. The devices in the list cannot run the app.
  • Save the new Citrix CMA (.cma) or MDX (.mdx) file that the tool creates to your computer. The CMA or MDX file is the wrapped app that contains Citrix logic and policies.

For iOS apps, you need to following these basic steps:

  • Specify an iOS mobile app IPA file.
  • Choose the iOS Distribution Provisioning Profile and Distribution Certificate to sign the app for distribution.

For Android apps, you need to follow these basic steps:

  • Specify an Android mobile app APK file.
  • Choose the Java Development Kit (JDK) on your computer for wrapping Android mobile apps.
  • Choose the Android Software Development Kit (SDK) on your computer for wrapping Android mobile apps.
  • Choose the Android APK Tool.
  • Choose the keystore for signing Android mobile apps.

When you run the App Preparation Tool, the app determines the application type and version. You can select the minimum and maximum operating system versions.

After you complete wrapping the app, you then upload the CMA or MDX file to CloudGateway. You use the AppController management console to configure specific application details and policy settings that Citrix Receiver enforces. When users log on by using Receiver, the app appears in the store. Users can then subscribe, download and install the app on their device. For more information about configuring the app details and policy settings in AppController, see Adding Mobile Apps to AppController.

Citrix is have released a new tech preview of Citrix VDI-in-a-box. The project is called Project Bermuda. Lets drill down in the beauti.

About Project Bermuda Tech Preview

Project Bermuda delivers a simple, complete VDI solution with personalized and pooled desktops. It runs on latest Windows operating systems, supports latest hypervisors, and integrates with your existing Citrix environment. Project Bermuda extends Citrix VDI-in-a-Box with several features:

  • Support for the latest hypervisor versions. VDI-in-a-Box now supports Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, XenServer 6.1, and vSphere 5.1.
  • StoreFront support. StoreFront users can access their VDI-in-a-Box desktops through StoreFront.
  • Microsoft Lync support. The Citrix HDX RealTime Optimization Pack for Microsoft Lync offers clear, crisp, high-definition video calls in conjunction with Microsoft Lync. Users can seamlessly participate in audio-video or audio-only calls to and from other HDX RealTime users and other standards-based video desktop and conference room systems.
(in other words the Optimization Pack 1.1 that also is released to XenDesktop ;o) )
  • Easy export of published images for use with XenDesktop and other purposes on the hypervisor.
  • Licensing management through a Citrix license server. If you are already using Citrix Licensing, you now have the option to also manage VDI-in-Box licensing through your central license server.
  • A third datastore can be configured. This allows separate storage of personal vDisks (the personalized data and applications used for personal desktops), enabling you to use faster storage for this to optimize performance.
  • Support for Windows Server 2012 images as virtual desktops using RDP connection only.
  • Touchless desktop agent upgrade. After upgrading VDI-in-a-Box, you can update the desktop agents on your existing images with a single click.
  • Optimization Pack for Google Earth (Vup Vup… )

Soon we will see more exciting technologies to be a part of VDI-in-a-box, as Excaliber will be released well if you can calculate 1+1 then you might figure it out 😉

Hi All

I have been so busy lately on many projects and meetings with vendors, partners and end customers so i cant complain about business is going slow, and its a finance crisis ;).

Its my mission to post articles releated to Citrix and Citrix ready vendors on my blog, so ladies and gentlemen and fellow geeks, its about time to boost up and put some articles on the blog. The webpage will be redesign so informations will be better searched, indexed. I will create a new structure so you can get access to best practise whitepapers, Tools i recommend, How you size, implement HDX 3D / HDX 3D Pro solutions, so a lot of work is on my schedule and i will make it happend.

I will in the upcoming week upload videos, I have recorded in May 2012 about HDX 3D Pro and HDX 3D on YouTube and post them here. I will record new video of how the new codec in HDX 3D Pro works + i will record the new experience in Excaliber and show it. I think its important to show how powerfull the technology is and Citrix is finally creating an Citrix Ready HDX 3D program where vendors like Autodesk, Nvidia, HP, IBM, Dell, Cisco, Siemens and many more attends. GPU virtualization is under development and will be released in Q1 2013, this will decrease the TCO, but more important HDX SOC will in early 2013 support HDX 3D Pro codec, so we will see an evolution on thin clients and the important message here is they will support this deep compression codec. THUMPS UP Citrix. Even better all the vendors have their eyes on HDX 3D / HDX 3D Pro now and the participants of the Citrix Ready HDX 3D Program is allready pushing their technologies to support Citrix helping getting this powerfull technology out to the business.

I will do a blogseries on HDX 3D Pro, but first i have some new results i will show “live” at Citrix User Group Norway (CUGtech) I have updated my session i did at E2E in Vienna and my Session – Best Practice XenApp HDX 3D / XenDesktop HDX 3D Pro i will show the audience awesome new stuff i have put together and i will show live how you can size solutions, troubleshoot and off course wideness the technology with your own eyes on any device.

and then i will release the blogpost series based on the presentation i am doing at CUGtech. Look out for it, there even might come a whitepaper, which many have been asking me about.

I hope you enjoy my blog and if you any great suggestion on how i can make my blog better or maybe cover a topic then let me know. write to me on my mail

If you are planning going to E2E Virtualization Conference in Hamburg 2012 this weekend i recommend you check out the Sunday 4th Nov 2012 at 10.30 a Geek Speak session i am doing with Michael Rüefli

Topic: Hosted Desktop Geek Speak Battle: XenApp vs XenDesktop.

We will talk about the main difference in: Application delivery, User Experience, Admin Experience, Scalability, Cost.
Please do mind this is a Geek Speak session, so if you are among the audience its your time to be apart of Geek Speak and tell us your experience or opinion. Its going to be FUN.
