What’s new in Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktop 7 2106

VDA install and upgrade: Workspace Environment Management (WEM)

In the VDA installers, the WEM Agent page has been updated. On the new WEM page, you first indicate whether your WEM deployment is on-premises or cloud (service). Then you provide either the address of the WEM Infrastructure Server (for WEM on-premises) or Cloud Connector (for WEM service). For more information, see Step 7. Workspace Environment Management.

Single-session VDA install and upgrade: Restore on install and upgrade failure

You can enable a restore on failure feature when installing or upgrading a single-session VDA. When this feature is enabled, the machine is returned to a restore point if the VDA install or upgrade fails. For details, see Restore on install or upgrade failure.

VDA install: Unsupported option

When installing a Windows VDA, the install_mcsio_driver command line option is no longer supported. To install the MCSIO driver, use the /includeadditional "Citrix MCS IODriver" command line option, or select the MCSIO entry on the Additional Components page of the VDA installer’s graphical interface.

Session reconnection after disconnect from machine in maintenance mode

Previously, when pooled (random) single-session desktop (VDI) users were disconnected from a machine in maintenance mode, session reconnection was not allowed to any machine in the pool. Multi-session and static single-session machines always allowed session reconnection in that circumstance.

Now, using PowerShell, you can control at the delivery group level whether session reconnection is allowed after a disconnect occurs on a machine in maintenance mode. This applies to all VDAs in the group (single-session and multi-session).

For details, see Control session reconnection when disconnected from machine in maintenance mode.

Windows Server 2022 support

The Citrix components, features, and technologies in this release that support Windows Server platforms now also support Windows Server 2022, unless otherwise noted.

Known issues

Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops

  • A red cross might appear on client-mapped drives inside the VDA sessions. [HDX-29984]
  • Windows Ink pen shortcuts might not set correctly on the VDA. [HDX-30097]
  • When the Auto Client Reconnect authentication policy is set on the Delivery Controller, the session fails to reconnect. The session also disconnected when connectivity is restored using the Auto Client Reconnect policy. [HDX-32475]
  • After a session roams, client mapped drives might not reconnect to the session. [HDX-32584]
  • (Applies only to Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops service.) When creating an MCS catalog from a virtual machine that was created from a paid Azure Marketplace image, the following error appears: Creating a virtual machine image from Marketplace image or a custom image sourced from a Marketplace image requires Plan information in the request. This issue occurs because a paid image requires a billing mechanism that is missing in the Azure plan description for the virtual machine. [PMCS-18326]
  • Machines cannot be powered cycled on various hypervisors. [PMCS-18325]
  • Provisioned target devices using MCSIO do not support Windows Server 2022 as a Hyper-V VM. [PVS-8663]

Citrix Provisioning

  • Provisioning images using the Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops setup wizard and the streaming VM wizard fail to create target devices when using Windows 2022 as the hypervisor. [PVS-8504]
  • Imaging a Windows 2022 system then booting from the virtual disk causes Windows to initiate crash recovery. [PVS-8791]
  • Windows 2022 Hyper-V Gen 1 VMs are not supported as provisioned target devices.

Profile Management

  • With the Enable search index roaming for Outlook feature enabled, the following error message appears when users search for emails in Microsoft Outlook: Something went wrong and your search couldn’t be completed. The issue occurs because Profile Management fails to hook the relevant APIs to the Windows Search service. [UPM-3535]

Workspace Environment Management

  • When you attempt to configure Windows Server 2022 as the matching result of a filter condition (with Client OS as the filter condition type), you find that Windows Server 2022 is missing from the Matching Result menu. [WEM-14036]

Virtual Delivery Agents (VDAs) 7 2106 for Windows Desktop/Server OS.

Version 2106 of the Windows single-session OS and multi-session OS VDAs includes the following enhancements. These items are in addition to any VDA installation and upgrade items listed earlier in this article.

Bidirectional URL support update – preview

Bidirectional URL redirection support has been added for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

Bidirectional URL redirection for the browsers requires Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops version 2106 or later, Citrix Workspace app 2106 or later, and Browser Redirection Extension version 5.0.

For more information, see Bidirectional content redirection policy settings.

Enable or disable the Always prompt for password setting on the VDA for a Windows multi-session OS

You can now set the registry key on Windows multi-session OS machines to control the Always prompt for password Microsoft policy setting. For more information, see Configure automatic logon to the VDA in the list of features managed through the registry.

Integrated Windows Authentication support for browser content redirection

Browser content redirection now supports single sign-on from non-domain joined clients to web servers configured with Integrated Windows Authentication (IWA) within the same domain as the VDA. With this enhancement, browser content redirection uses your domain user name and password for authentication to the IWA web server. For more information, see Single sign-on with Integrated Windows Authentication.

Proxy authentication support for Rendezvous connections

You can now use machine-based authentication with Negotiate and Kerberos or NTLM network authentication protocols to establish Rendezvous connections through HTTP proxies. For more information, see Proxy considerations.

Remote PC Access disconnected session timer

With Remote PC Access, you can now configure a timer that logs off users after their session expires. If the user session remains disconnected for a set period, the timer logs off the user allowing another user to access the same physical PC remotely. To enable the timer, you must configure the Remote PC Access disconnected session timer and Disconnected session timer interval policy settings. For more information, see Remote PC Access disconnected session timer in the Session limits policy.

Virtual Delivery Agents (VDAs) 7 2107 for Linux

Version 2107 of the Linux VDA includes the following new features and enhancements:

Centrify support for MCS-created RHEL 7/CentOS 7 and RHEL 8/CentOS 8 machines

We have added Centrify support for joining MCS-created RHEL 7/CentOS 7 and RHEL 8/CentOS 8 machines to Windows domains. For more information, see Use Machine Creation Services (MCS) to create Linux VMs.

Simplified kernel module rebuild for USB redirection

We now provide ctxusbcfg.sh in the Linux VDA source code file, citrix-linux-vda-sources.zip. The script helps to simplify building the VHCI kernel modules (usb-vhci-hcd.ko and usb-vhci-iocif.ko) with and without the Dynamic Kernel Module Support (DKMS) option. DKMS helps to rebuild the VHCI kernel modules automatically when a kernel is upgraded. For more information, see Configure USB redirection.

New performance counters

The Provisioning Server supports the following new performance counters for reporting IO failures. In addition, all performance counters are now 64-bit.

Vdisk WRITE failed perf_counter_large_rawcount Total count of failed attempts to write to a vDisk file.
Vdisk READ failed perf_counter_large_rawcount Total count of failed attempts to read from a vDisk file.
IO-Reply Send failed perf_counter_large_rawcount Total count of failed attempts to send vDisk IO replies.
Device Count Active perf_counter_large_rawcount Count of devices that this provisioning server is currently streaming.
Device Count Timeout perf_counter_large_rawcount Total count of devices that have no heartbeat or IO activity for 90 seconds (default) and are timed out by the Citrix Provisioning server.
Device Count Cache Failover perf_counter_large_rawcount Count of devices configured to use a local disk for write cache, but unexpectedly fail over to use the write cache on the server.
Device Count Forced Reconnect perf_counter_large_rawcount Total count of devices that are forced by the provisioning server to reconnect.

For more about performance counters, see Stream process performance counters.

Starting VM number for Streamed VM and Citrix Virtual Desktops Setup

The Streamed VM Setup Wizard now includes a starting VM number, as does the Citrix Virtual Desktops Setup Wizard.

Citrix Profile Management 7 2106

This release includes the following new features and enhancements. It also addresses several issues that help to improve overall performance and stability.

Windows Server 2022 support

The Citrix components and technologies in this release that support Windows Server platforms now also support Windows Server 2022, unless otherwise noted. For more information, see Windows Server 2022 support.

Replicate user stores

We have added a feature to let you replicate a user store to multiple paths upon each logon and logoff – in addition to the path that the Path to user store policy specifies. The feature is implemented through the Replicate user stores policy. To synchronize to the user stores files and folders modified during a session, enable active write back. This feature does not currently support full container solutions. Enabling the policy can increase system I/O and might prolong logoffs. For more information, see Replicate user stores.

Enable credential-based access to user stores

By default, Citrix Profile Management impersonates the current user to access user stores. Therefore, it requires the current user to have permission to directly access the user stores. Enable this feature if you do not want Profile Management to impersonate the current user when accessing user stores. You can put user stores in storage repositories (for example, Azure Files) that the current user has no permission to access.

To ensure that Profile Management can access user stores, save the profile storage server’s credentials in Workspace Environment Management (WEM) or Windows Credential Manager. We recommend that you use Workspace Environment Management to eliminate the need of configuring the same credentials for each machine where Profile Management runs. If you use Windows Credential Manager, use the Local System account to securely save the credentials.

NOTE:

To ensure that NTFS permissions are retained, you must put the entire profile in a profile container.

For more information, see Enable credential-based access to user stores.

Accelerate folder mirroring

We have added a feature to accelerate folder mirroring. With both the Accelerate folder mirroring and the Folders to mirror policies enabled, Profile Management stores mirrored folders on a VHDX-based virtual disk. It attaches the virtual disk during logons and detaches it during logoffs, thus eliminating the need to copy the folders between the user store and local profiles.

Accelerate folder mirroring

Citrix Workspace Environment Management 7 2106

Workspace Environment Management 2106 includes the following new features. For information about bug fixes, see Fixed issues.

Windows Server 2022 support

The Citrix components and technologies in this release that support Windows Server platforms now also support Windows Server 2022, unless otherwise noted. For more information, see Windows Server 2022 support.

Overwrite or merge application security rules

This release adds two settings, Overwrite and Merge, to the Administration Console > Security > Application Security tab. The settings let you determine how the agent processes application security rules.

  • Select Overwrite if you want to overwrite existing rules. When selected, the rules that are processed last overwrite rules that were processed earlier. We recommend that you apply this setting only to single-session machines.
  • Select Merge if you want to merge rules with existing rules. When conflicts occur, the rules that are processed last overwrite rules that were processed earlier.

For more information, see Application Security.

Support for the Windows 10 2009 template

We added support for the Windows 10 2009 (also known as 20H2) template introduced in Citrix optimizer. You can now use Workspace Environment Management to perform template-based system optimizations for Windows 10 2009 machines. In addition, we have updated all existing templates to reflect changes introduced in the latest standalone Citrix optimizer. For information about using Citrix optimizer, see Citrix Optimizer.

Citrix Session Recording 7 2107

This release includes the following new features and enhancements:

Event-triggered dynamic screen recording

The 2106 release introduced event-only recordings – the ability to record only specific events throughout a session – without capturing any screens. However, there are scenarios where you might want to automatically start recording screens when certain events occur during an event-only recording. As of this release, you can configure this recording behavior (event-triggered dynamic screen recording) using event response policies. For more information, see Event response policies.

Event response policies

Windows Server 2022 support

Components, features, and technologies that support Windows Server operating systems now also support Windows Server 2022, unless noted otherwise. For more information, see Windows Server 2022 support.

Monitor file transfers

We have extended the scope of event logging to monitor file transfers between session hosts (VDAs) and client devices (including mapped client drives and generic redirected mass storage devices). Selecting the Log sensitive file events option for an event logging policy triggers the logging of file transfers, no matter whether or not you specify the File monitoring list. This enhanced feature requires Windows VDA 2106 or later. For more information, see Configure policies.

Record events only

In addition to recording screens, you can now record only specific events. This feature helps to free up storage space. To use this feature, activate either of the following new system-defined policies and then set an event logging policy to specify which events to record.

  • Record event only for everyone with notification
  • Record event only for everyone without notification
Record events only

An event-only recording played in the web player contains an event statistics pie chart and histogram. The pie chart and histogram hold static throughout playback. You can navigate to a specific event from within the right pane.

An event-only recording played in the web player

The following screen capture shows an example of an event-only recording being played in the Session Recording Player. The EventOnly column indicates a screen recording or an event-only recording. All events are present in the Events and Bookmarks panel and show as yellow dots in the lower part of the Session Recording Player.

For more information, see Configure policies.

Citrix App Layering 2107

This release supports the following Windows versions, hypervisors, and connection brokers.

  • Windows 10 version 21H1
  • Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 2106
  • Citrix Provisioning 2106
  • VMware Horizon View (JIT only) 8.2

Fixes

  • After upgrading from vSphere 6.7 to vSphere 7.0 Update 2 or later, you can now create layers and publish images with VSAN storage. (ALHELP-1410)
  • After upgrading to Windows 10 1909 or 20H2, ClickOnce apps now work with existing user layer disks. (ALHELP-1425)
  • An app layer that is assigned to a subset of users on a machine and contains certain Windows system files unique to the app no longer causes problems for users that are not assigned to the layer. (ALHEALP-1427)
  • On an image with EL running, you can select the remote admin share where OneDrive saves files without the machine failing with a blue screen. (ALHELP-1431)
  • When Elastic Layering is enabled on an image, a script that installs an application on the image now completes as expected. (ALHELP-1432)

Labs feature

Labs features are previews of potential functionality. While a feature is in Labs, do not use it in production. There is no guarantee that this feature will be included in the product, nor that it will work the same way if it is.

  • You can assign app layers as elastic layers on images that use a different OS layer: Elastic layer assignments normally require the App layer assigned uses the same OS layer that was used to create the App layer. You can try assigning an App layer as an Elastic layer on a layered image that uses a different OS layer.IMPORTANT:Issues can result from running an elastic layer on a different OS layer than the one used to create it.

To use a Labs feature, enable it in System settings.

Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops service

What is new (September 2021)

New and enhanced features

Preserve custom columns that degrade performance. Previously, on the Search node of the Full Configuration management interface, custom columns that degraded performance disappeared after you refreshed the browser window or signed out of the console and then signed in. You can now control whether to preserve those custom columns. For more information, see Use Search in the Full Configuration management interface.

Use the Automated Configuration tool to back up and restore. We added a node, Backup and Restore, to the Full Configuration management interface. That node aggregates all resources related to the Automated Configuration tool, including information about:

  • Scheduling automated backups of your Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops configuration using a single command
  • Restoring from a previous backup if necessary
  • Performing backups and restores granularly
  • Other use cases supported

For more information, see the Automated Configuration documentation.

Support for non-domain-joined catalogs. We added an identity type, Non-domain-joined, to the Machine Catalog Setup > Machine Identities page of the Full Configuration management interface. With that identity type, you can use MCS to create machines that are not joined to any domain. For more information, see Create machine catalogs.

Support for using a machine profile. We added an option, Use a machine profile, to the Machine Catalog Setup > Master Image page of the Full Configuration management interface. The option lets you specify which machine profile you want the image to inherit the configuration from when creating VMs in Azure environments. The image can inherit the following configurations from the selected machine profile:

  • Accelerated networking
  • Boot diagnostics
  • Host disk caching (relating to OS and MCSIO disks)
  • Machine size (unless otherwise specified)
  • Tags placed on the VM

For more information, see Create a machine catalog using an Azure Resource Manager image.

Support for Windows Server 2022. Requires minimum VDA 2106.

Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops Standard for Azure

A goal of Citrix is to deliver new features and product updates to service customers when they are available. New releases provide more value, so there’s no reason to delay updates. To you, the customer administrator, this process is transparent.

September 2021 – what’s new

Support for Windows Server 2022 (requires minimum VDA 2106).

Citrix Cloud Healthcheck

Cloud Health Check allows you to run checks that gauge the health and availability of the site and its components. You can run health checks for Virtual Delivery Agents (VDAs), StoreFront servers, and Profile Management. VDA health checks identify possible causes for common VDA registration, session launch, and time zone redirection issues.

If issues are present during the checks, Cloud Health Check provides a detailed report and the actions to fix the issues. Each time Cloud Health Check starts, it checks for the latest version of scripts on the Content Delivery Network (CDN) and automatically downloads the scripts if they do not exist on the local machine. Cloud Health Check always chooses the latest local version of scripts to run health checks.

Citrix Workspace App 7 2108 for Windows

Inactivity Timeout for Citrix Workspace sessions

Admins can configure the inactivity timeout value to specify the amount of idle time allowed before the user is automatically signed out of the Citrix Workspace session. You are automatically signed out of Workspace if there is no activity from the mouse, keyboard, or touch for the specified interval of time. The inactivity timeout does not affect the already running Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops sessions or the Citrix StoreFront stores.

For more information see Inactivity Timeout for Workspace Sessions

NOTE:

Admins can configure the inactivity timeout only for Workspace (cloud) sessions.

Support for custom web stores [Technical preview]

With this release, you can access your organization’s custom web store from the Citrix Workspace app for Windows. To use this feature, the admin must add the domain or the custom web store to the list of allowed URLs in the Global App Configuration Service. Once this is done, you can provide the custom web store URL in the Add Account screen in Citrix Workspace app. The custom web store opens in the native Workspace app window.

For information about configuring custom web stores, see Custom web stores

NOTE:

Technical previews are available for customers to test in their non-production or limited production environments, and to give them an opportunity to share feedback. Citrix does not accept support cases for feature previews but welcomes feedback for improving them. Citrix may or may not act on feedback based on its severity, criticality, and importance. It is advised that Beta builds not be deployed in production environments.

StoreFront to Workspace URL Migration [Technical preview]

As your organization transitions from on-prem StoreFront to Workspace, end users are required to manually add the new Workspace URL to the Workspace app on their end points. This feature enables administrators to seamlessly migrate users from a StoreFront store to a Workspace store with minimal user interaction.

For more information about this feature, see StoreFront to Workspace URL Migration [Technical preview]

NOTE:

Technical previews are available for customers to test in their non-production or limited production environments, and to give them an opportunity to share feedback. Citrix does not accept support cases for feature previews but welcomes feedback for improving them. Citrix may or may not act on feedback based on its severity, criticality, and importance. Citrix Workspace App 2108 for Linux

App protection

The app protection feature is now fully functional.

App protection requires that you install an add-on license on your License Server. A Citrix Virtual Desktops license must also be present. For information on Licensing, see the Configure section in the Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops documentation.

The app protection feature supports apps and desktop sessions and is enabled by default. However, you must configure the feature in the AuthManConfig.xml file to enable it for authentication manager and Self-Service plug-in interfaces.

Starting with this release, you can launch protected resources from Citrix Workspace app while Mozilla Firefox is running.

For more information, see App protection.

Audio configuration enhancement

Previously, the default value of the VdcamVersion4Support attribute in the module.ini file was set to True. With this release, the default is set to False. As a result, only the default audio device with the name Citrix HDX Audio appears in the session. This enhancement aims to minimize the audio issues that occur when the attribute is set to True.

To enable this feature, do the following:

  1. Navigate to the \<ICAROOT\>/config/ folder and open the module.ini file.
  2. Go to the clientaudio section and add the following entry:VdcamVersion4Support=True
  3. Restart the session for the changes to take effect.

Citrix Workspace App 21.9.0 for Android

  • Citrix Workspace app 21.9.0 for Android supports Android 12 Beta 4.

This release addresses several issues that help to improve overall performance and stability.

Citrix Workspace App 2109 for Chrome OS

Support for virtual desktops in multiple-monitor setups

You can now use your virtual desktop in full-screen mode across a subset of available monitors. Previously when you selected multi-monitor mode from the toolbar, the virtual desktop spanned across all available monitors. You can now drag your virtual desktop to span two monitors (out of more than two) and then select multi-monitor mode. A typical use case for this scenario is where you chose to run a video conferencing app on your native device monitor and want to view your virtual desktop contents in full-screen across your other two monitors during the call.

NOTE:

To use this feature, ensure that within General settings, “Use all the monitors to span display” under Multi-monitor settings is selected.

Battery status indicator

The battery status of the device now appears in the notification area within the virtual desktop session. Previously, the battery status indicator wasn’t visible in the session, which sometimes led to a loss of productivity when the laptop shuts down after the battery runs out.

This feature is supported only on VDA versions 7.18 and later.

NOTE:

With Microsoft Windows 10 VDA, the battery status indicator might take about 1 or 2 minutes to appear.

Support for copying image clips

Using the standard keyboard shortcuts, you can now copy and paste image clips between your local device and your virtual desktop and app sessions. You can use the standard keyboard shortcuts for copying and pasting while using apps such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Paint, and Adobe Photoshop. Previously, this functionality was available only for text.

NOTE:

  • Due to network bandwidth constraints, sessions might become unresponsive when you try to copy and paste an image clip larger than 2 MB.
  • You can select and press Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V to copy and paste. The right-click functionality to copy or paste is also supported.
  • We’ve tested this feature with BMP, PNG, JPEG, and GIF formats.

Auto-launch of ICA sessions

Citrix Workspace app for Chrome OS now supports auto-launch of ICA (Independent computing architecture) sessions on Google managed devices or users. With this feature, you can access resources remotely from Citrix Workspace for web. The downloaded ICA file starts automatically, with the Citrix Workspace app for Chrome OS, if it has been installed on the device. Previously, you were able to only download ICA files and open the files manually in order to start resources. Also, the ICA file wasn’t deleted when opened and remained on the device. With this release, the ICA file is automatically deleted from the device – once it is used to auto-launch the session.

For more information, see Auto-launch of ICA sessions.

Note (HTTPS):

If you are on HTTP-based stores, for a secure context, we recommend that you transition to HTTPS-based stores. For more information, see HTTPS.
