  • The Refresh Interval GPO setting allows you to specify the interval, in seconds, that the watermark is refreshed. This makes the time shown in the watermark more accurate.

  • Depending on how you want your golden image to be managed, you can change the source of the virtual machine template by editing the pool.  You can edit an instant-clone desktop pool to change the virtual machine template source from vCenter to Image Catalog or reverse. You can edit a full-clone desktop pool or farm to change the golden image and snapshot from vCenter to Image Catalog or reverse.

VMware Horizon Connection Server On-Premises

    • Alert mechanism for Forensics Select Hold feature

The hold and release APIs for the forensics select hold feature have been enhanced to include the machine state for all desktops assigned to a held user. In addition, a new environment variable has been added to identify whether the user is a held user so that an administrator can trigger data collection scripts when a held user logs on to a desktop.

    • Network enhancements for instant clone pools and farms

Networks displayed during the create instant clone pool or farm workflow are now filtered based on the network type of the network configured in the snapshot’s preferred network adapter (Network Adapter 1 while the snapshot was taken).

    • TrueSSO Trigger Mode has been added to the SAML 2.0 tab under Other Components in the System Health dashboard (Monitor > Dashboard).

    • The new Enable Host Redirection setting sets the load balancer name and enable HTTP host redirection capability. When an HTTP request from a load balancer host reaches the Connection Server, the Connection Server responds with an external HTTP redirection URL. For subsequent requests, the Horizon Client directly connects to the Connection Server using the external URL, thereby minimizing misroutes that might occur at the load balancer.

    • Pre-login message now requires administrator to acknowledge the message before proceeding to login.

    • Encoder Name has been added to the Horizon Help Desk Tool in Horizon 8.

    • View Unrecognized Session Count was added to the Connection Servers and Gateway Servers tabs in the System Health dashboard (Monitor > Dashboard) in the Admin Console. This allows administrators to troubleshoot random disconnections of end user sessions due to unrecognized requests received either at UAG or at the Connection Server.

Virtual Desktops

  • Option to create multiple custom compute profiles (CPU, RAM, Cores per Socket) for a single golden image snapshot during desktop pool creation.

  • VMware Blast now detects the presence of a vGPU system and applies higher quality default settings.

  • vSphere Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) in vSphere 7.0 U3f and later can now be configured to automatically migrate vGPU desktops when entering ESXi host maintenance mode. For more information, see https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/88271.

  • Forensic quarantine feature that archives the virtual disks of selected dedicated or floating Instant Clone desktops for forensic purposes.

  • The Blast CPU controller feature is now enabled by default in scale environments.

  • Removed pop-up for suggesting best practices during creation of an instant clone. The information now appears on the first tab/screen of the creation wizard.

  • Help Desk administrator roles are now applicable to all access groups, not just to the root access group as with previous releases.

  • Administrators can encrypt a session recording file into a .bin format so that it cannot be played from the file system.

  • If using an older Web browser, a message appears when launching the Horizon Console indicating that using a modern browser will provide a better user experience.

  • Added Support for HW encoding on Intel GPU for Windows

  • VVC-based USB-R is enabled by default for non-desktop (Chrome/HTML Access/Android) Blast clients.

  • Physical PC (as Unmanaged Pool) now supports Windows 10 Education and Pro (20H2 and later) and Windows 11 Education and Pro (21H2) with the VMware Blast protocol.

    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Workstation 9.0

    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Server 9.0 and 8.4

  • Beginning with this release, the following Linux distributions are no longer supported.

    • RHEL Server 8.5

  • You can now install Horizon Agent on Linux virtual machines deployed in a vSphere 8.0 environment.

  • This release supports the use of Linux desktops and multi-session hosts in an IPv6 environment. Use the --ipv6 command-line option to install Horizon Agent with IPv6 support. The Subnet6 option in the /etc/vmware/viewagent-custom.confconfiguration file lets you specify the IPv6 subnet of the Linux machine.

  • For SSO logins, Linux desktops use the new VMware display manager and VMware greeter, instead of Gnome Display Manager (GDM) and X Display Manager Control Protocol (XDMCP), to control the login and launch of user sessions. The VMware display manager improves launch performance and eliminates problems with SSO that occurred previously from the dependency on GDM.

  • Smart card redirection now works with all versions of PC/SC Lite. The /etc/vmware/config file includes two new options, pcscd.maxReaderContext and pcscd.readBody, that let you configure reader context and message reading settings if you use a custom-built PC/SC Lite library.

  • This release supports smart card single sign-on (SSO). Smart card SSO enables users to launch desktop sessions automatically without entering their smart card credentials.

  • A new configuration file, /etc/vmware/viewagent-greeter.conf, allows you to configure the behavior of the VMware greeter in cases where True SSO or smart card SSO fails. The file also contains the PKCS #11 settings required for smart card SSO.

VMware Horizon Agent 8 2209 for Windows

  • Support for new operating systems

Horizon Client is supported on the following Linux distribution:

    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9.0

  • Selective printer redirection

Users can specify which local and network printers to redirect to remote sessions using the VMware Integrated Printing feature. Unselected printers are not redirected.

  • Configuration option to hide the Horizon Client window

An administrator can use the view.hideClientAfterLaunchSession configuration key or –hideClientAfterLaunchSessioncommand-line option to hide the Horizon Client window after a remote desktop or published application opens. This configuration setting is required for kiosk mode.

VMware Horizon Client 2209 for HTML5

HTML Access 2209 includes the following new features:

  • ChromeOS Flex endpoints

You can use HTML Access on devices running ChromeOS Flex.

  • Request/take screen control in Microsoft Teams

With Media Optimization for Microsoft Teams, users can request/take control of screen sharing in VDI and RDSH desktop sessions.

  • Improvements to multiple-monitor mode

When users connect or disconnect a monitor with the display setting configured to Use all displays, the display changes take effect immediately, without requiring users to reconnect to the current session. This release also fixes certain display issues that previously occurred after closing the cover of a client Chromebook device.

  • Keyboard shortcut mappings

Users can configure mappings that interpret certain keyboard combinations on the client device as Windows shortcuts in the remote desktop. This feature integrates the shortcuts associated with the Enable Windows key for Desktops option and the Enable Command-A, Command-C, Command-V, and Command-X option (for Mac devices). These options have been removed from the HTML Access settings.

  • Client drive redirection

With the client drive redirection feature, users running Chrome and Chromium-based Edge browsers can share folders or drives on the local client device with remote desktops and published applications.

  • webviewMode URI query

This release introduces the webviewMode URI query option. When set to true, this option hides the sidebar during the desktop session. It also enables certain mobile apps to send soft keyboard events to the remote desktop and to switch between native touch mode and trackpad touch mode using the mobile app interface.

  • Support for multiple speakers

If more than one speaker is connected to the client computer, and the remote desktop supports multiple device redirection with the speaker feature, you can use all the speakers connected to the client computer in the remote desktop.
